Herpes Esophagitis

 69 year-old man with multiple myeloma, who complained of odynophagia (pain with swallowing) and dysphagia (difficulty with swallowing). Endoscopy revealed esophageal inflammation, with multiple superficial ulcerations. Cytologic exam of mucosal brushings demonstrated evidence of herpes virus.


Herpetic ulcers in the esophagus of a 31 year old man with AIDS who presented with odynophagia and dysphagia. Symptoms responded to antiviral therapy.
