Esophageal Varices -- Stigmata of Bleeding



Left: Protruding vessel on a large esophageal varix in a patient with cirrhosis who presented with hematemesis (vomiting blood). Right: The visible vessel and an adjacent varix were successfully banded, and bleeding did not recur.




Left: Similar to above; protruding vessel on a large esophageal varix in a 36 year-old man with alcoholic cirrhosis with recent hematemesis. Right: The site was banded, and rapidly became pale.
