Gastric Leiomyoma

64 year-old woman who presented with massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding and severe anemia. Emergency endoscopy demonstrated this smooth, polypoid lesion high in the gastric body, with a surface ulceration which was slowly bleeding. Efforts to control the bleeding endoscopically only caused the rate of bleeding to increase significantly, and prompt surgical resection was required.

Incidental finding in the proximal gastric body of an 82 year-old woman undergoing endoscopy for evaluation of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. Retroflexed view on left; close-up view on right.

Smooth tumor (LEFT) occupying the pyloric channel in a 59 year-old woman with symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction. The lesion extended into the duodenum, where the lesion contained deep ulceration and obstructed the lumen (RIGHT). Endoscopic biopsies were benign, and histology of the resected surgical specimen was consistent with epithelioid leiomyoma.
