Control of Bleeding
58
year-old man presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding -- hematemesis
(vomiting blood) and melena (black, tarry stools). Endoscopy revealed an ulcer
with this "visible vessel", which was bleeding intermittently.
The
vessel was successfully eradicated with the heater probe. There was no recurrent
bleeding.

82 year-old woman with upper gastrointestinal bleeding manifested as
hematemesis. Endoscopy revealed a sentinel clot in the gastric body (left).
The clot was lavaged away (center), to reveal an erythematous
ulcer base with a visible vessel. Two hemostatic clips (right)
were successful applied to the vessel, and there was no further bleeding.
